What Green Cleaning Is (and Isn't)
Green cleaning, in its meaningful form, refers to a cleaning approach that prioritizes human and environmental health by using products and methods that minimize toxic chemical exposure, reduce environmental impact, and protect indoor air quality. It's not just about swapping one cleaning product for another — it's a systemic approach to how a building is cleaned.
What it's not: a marketing label, a guarantee that a product is safe, or automatically the same as "fragrance-free" or "natural." The word "natural" has no regulatory meaning in cleaning products. Plenty of natural compounds are highly toxic. The actual markers of meaningful green cleaning are certifications, product formulations, and cleaning practices — not labels.
The Certifications That Actually Matter
EPA Safer Choice
The most meaningful US certification for commercial cleaning products. EPA Safer Choice evaluates every ingredient in a product — not just the active ingredients — against safety criteria for human health and aquatic toxicity. Products that earn this certification have been assessed at the ingredient level. This is the standard we use as our default.
Green Seal GS-37
Green Seal's GS-37 standard applies specifically to commercial cleaning products. It evaluates toxicity, biodegradability, and packaging, and prohibits specific chemicals of concern. GS-37 certified products meet rigorous third-party standards for both performance and safety.
UL ECOLOGO
UL's environmental certification program evaluates cleaning products against health, environmental, and performance standards. Another credible third-party standard, though EPA Safer Choice tends to be more widely used in commercial cleaning programs.
What Goes Into a Genuine Green Cleaning Program
Product Selection
Using EPA Safer Choice or Green Seal certified cleaning products across all chemical types — all-purpose cleaners, restroom products, floor care, glass cleaner, and disinfectants. The disinfectant piece is often where programs fall short: most conventional disinfectants use chemistries that are effective but harsh. EPA-registered disinfectants with more benign chemistries (quaternary ammonium alternatives, hydrogen peroxide-based) exist and should be the default in occupied commercial spaces.
Vacuum Filtration
Standard vacuums recirculate fine particulate back into the air. HEPA-filtered vacuums capture 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns or larger, including the fine particulate that contributes to poor indoor air quality and allergy symptoms. This matters especially in carpeted offices with allergy-sensitive employees.
Microfiber Over Cotton
Microfiber cloths clean more effectively with less product — often with water alone — because of their fiber structure. They also reduce cross-contamination compared to cotton mop systems when used in color-coded programs. Less product usage means less chemical exposure and less environmental load.
Dilution Control
Concentrated products used with dilution control systems both reduce chemical use and ensure consistent effectiveness. Over-concentrated cleaning products are a common cause of surface damage and unnecessary chemical exposure in commercial environments.
